Decorating Books to Consider

The shelves in every bookstore are overflowing with dozens of home decorating books. Keep in mind 10 different people can have 10 different reactions to the same book. This is definitely true of books pertaining to home decorating. So many styles, so many perspectives…soooo many opinions on the value of the book!
Each book will not be loved by all…but keep an open mind. There is usually something to be learned from every book. Even if that “something” is finding what we don’t like!
Return here often. This page will continue to evolve as new books are published and are discovered by Home-Decorating-Mentor.com or are brought to our attention by our readers.

"Home Therapy"
By Lauri Ward
"The ultimate "before and after" decorating book that shows how real people found the solutions to their decorating problems using the space they have, the things they like, and the budget they can afford.
The pioneer of home "redecorating," Lauri Ward has been the "home therapist" to thousands, through the services of her company, Use-What-You-Have(r), Inc., and her popular books. For more than two decades, her revolutionary approach to home decorating, which focuses on identifying and solving the ten most common decorating problems -- using what you have -- has earned her a large and loyal following. Now, Home Therapy takes readers inside the homes -- and lives -- of twenty-five of Lauri Ward's clients, to reveal a wide range of decorating challenges, and the solutions that she was able to offer."
The book’s format is straightforward…25 client states their decorating dilemma, the situation is diagnosed by Ms. Ward’s, mistakes are pointed out then the remedy is outlined and carried out.
Most transformations took less than a day!
In many instances, long-term recommendations were made. When the homeowner completed these recommendations, new photos were included to show the changes. Great way to show it's the little things that make a difference!
The before and after floor plans are great! They help the reader understand why the designer is making a particular change. With the bird’s eye view the floor plan provides, it’s easy to visualize the traffic pattern, the focal point and the volume of furniture in the room.
My only complaint, and it applies to many “before and after” layouts, is the before photographs are in black and white. The black and white photos don’t allow an apple-to-apple comparison. I know why they do it…the “after” shots look more dramatic…but I still would prefer both photos have equal footing.
An informative book with lots to offer!

”New Decorating Book”
From: Better Homes And Gardens

7th Edition
From a strictly visual perspective, this is a stunning book. There are dozens and dozens of inspiring photos. The text that accompanies the photos is on point and helpful.
It’s being touted as a 4-in-1 book. It’s a Design Primer a Dream Book, a Room-by-Room Planner and a Workbook all wrapped into one.
If you are expecting the “New” in the title to mean a departure from Better Homes and Gardens traditional and formal–leaning roots, you might be disappointed.
Although there are a few more modern rooms featured (“modern” by Better Homes and Gardens standards), the majority of the book focuses on Traditional design…to the relief of it’s many followers. However, this is Traditional with an updated, refreshing look.
FYI: An 8th edition has recently hit the shelves.

”Romantic Country Style: Creating the English Cottage Look in Your Home”
From: The Editors of “Victoria” Magazine

If you’re seeking to emulate the English-cottage look, this book will delight you. It escorts you from the entry way through indoor living spaces, to bedrooms and baths, home offices and out the back door to outside entertaining areas.
Even if you are familiar with the basics of cottage decorating, you’ll find inspiration within its covers.
The photographs are plentiful and inspiring.
You will find yourself looking at your own living spaces in new ways.

”You Can Do It! Small Spaces”
By: Christopher Lowell
Popular TV guru embraces the challenge of turning modest spaces into knockout, well-designed and livable rooms. As with all things “Christopher”, it’s slightly over the top (okay, sometimes more than slightly!).
However, the man knows how to put a room together. His “ 7 Layers” approach to decorating won’t steer you wrong.
If you read what he has to say and study the photos, you are sure to find many seeds of inspiration.

Your House, Your Home
By: Randy Florke with Nancy J. Becker

This is a warm and personal approach to decorating from the heartland of America…no pretense here.
This is a decorating book that contains real-life examples of simple elegance. Randy Florke focuses on what he calls “the three muses” of decorating: color, comfort and economy.
A contributor to Country Livingmagazine, Randy stays true to his genre. The photos practically invite you to step into them and make yourself at home. Many great ideas for making a “cookie-cutter” house a home to cherish.

Keep in mind that collecting home decorating books can be addictive!

Once you start there may be no turning back. It's a great way to explore different avenues of decorating and design before you charge ahead with a room.
So enjoy exploring the pages of different decorating books.
Who knows...the next home decorating book you pick up may expose you to a decorating style you never would have considered.
